Belmont Jewel posted an improved effort when runner-up last time out and looks worth a bet at 5/1 to go one better and land the spoils in the 2.15 at Wincanton today.
This seven-year-old was an Irish pint winner who shaped quite nicely on her second start after joining Michael Scudamore when a staying on under tender handling to be never nearer 28 lengths eighth of 16 to Posh Trish in a decent novice hurdle at Chepstow.
She then failed to shine next time up and after being allotted an opening handicap mark of 98 was pulled-up in her first two starts in that sphere. However, on her second start back from wind surgery there was lots to like about her run at Huntingdon earlier in the month when second of 10 to Mabela in a class 4.
Belmont Jewel raced prominently throughout before taking up the running going well three from home. After coming under a ride two from home she found plenty and only got headed near the finish to be beaten a neck by the well-supported Dam Skelton trained 4/1 favourite.
It was a big step back in the right direction and a 2lb rise in the weights to 91 looks more than fair. That looks exploitable, especially as Belmont Jewel now drops down into class 5 company. With the yard in good form she looks weighted to take all the beating in this if building on her lastest effort.
Daily Sport recommended bet: 2pts win Belmont Jewel (5/1 bet365, BetVictor, Sky Bet- BOG)
