Royal Normandy posted an imporved effort last time out and looks worth siding with at 6/1 on handicap debut in the 4.55 at Salisbury today now stepped up in trip and fitted with the cheekpieces for the first time.

Andrew Balding’s charge was well beaten in two starts as a juvenile, but there was much more to like about his return to acttion at Leicester when fifth of 10 to Classic Win over 6f.

Although beaten just over 11 lengths,  three-year-old raced closed up and kept on inside the final furlong without ever troubling to threaten the leaders or being unduly knocked about.

It was a run which suggested a step up to today’s 7f would suit, and the form of the race has worked out well as the runner-up Accra Beach and third home Aranka have both come out and won since.

Royal Normandy has been allotted an lowly opening mark of just 54 on the back of that effort, and that could be lenient if the fitting of the headgear for the first time has the desired effect.

Daily Sport rceommended bet: 3pts win Royal Normandy (6/1 Paddy Power – BOG)
